Application Checklist - Submission Deadline January 15, 2012 for September, 2012 Admission

 

Application form: please fill out the Online Application Form.  There is a non-refundable application fee of $90 for Canadian students & $150 for International Students, payable to the Faculty of Graduate Studies.

Please send the following to the Graduate School of Journalism:

• Cover letter one page long stating why you wish to be a journalist and the goals you wish to achieve.

• Resume or C/V

• Portfolio or Manuscript

  Please submit up to 10 pages of what you feel is your best work.

  The intent of the portfolio is to provide the Admissions Committee with an overview of your writing abilities.

Manuscript for applicants with little or no journalism experience:

If you do not have extensive journalism experience, you may choose to create a fresh manuscript in the style of a magazine features piece.   This does not have to be perfect, as you would be coming here to master journalistic writing skills.  However, your manuscript should demonstrate your writing abilities and can show which topic you are interested in covering as a journalist.  Manuscripts should be double-spaced and can be double-sided.

An original manuscript should take the form of a features piece you would find in (for example) The Globe and Mail, Maclean’s Magazine, Newsweek, The New York Times, The Economist – or any major online news magazine.

The research that went into your manuscript may be outlined in a separate page that accompanies your work.

Portfolio for applicants with some or extensive journalism experience:

If you have journalism experience, please submit up to 10 pages of published work.  You may submit originals or photocopies or prints from online media. 

Do not submit your portfolio in a binder, folder or plastic sleeves – these are removed when received.  Please submit up to 10 pages that are clipped or stapled together.

Do not submit DVD’s or CD’s of video or audio.  These will not be reviewed by the Admissions Committee.  Please submit a list of broadcast material or include as part of your CV, with hyperlinks if appropriate.

If you submit a page of hyperlinks, you must include hard copies of select, best online pieces from those links.  Journalism staff will not print out your links.

Portfolios and manuscripts must be sent in hard copy form.   Journalism staff will not print electronic copies of manuscripts or portfolios.

Please ask institutions and referees to send us the following.  Original copies of each document must be sent directly to the School of Journalism from the issuers in signed and sealed envelopes.

• Transcripts: two official transcripts from each post-secondary institution attended. If not included on transcripts, official certification of degree completion must also be submitted prior to the first day of classes. Transcripts & official degrees written in another language must be accompanied by certified English translations.  Note that transcripts may be sent in separately and ahead of your application.  A file will be set up when we receive your first piece of mail.  Please refer to: Canadian Transcripts   or  International Transcripts.
• References: three reference letters with original signatures are required. Reference letters or reference forms are equally valid.  Reference forms can be found at the Faculty of Graduate Studies website.  If possible, we prefer that at least two of your references be from academic referees.  Referees may use the online electronic reference form - you will be prompted to provide their contact information during the online application process. Note that reference letters may be sent in separately and ahead of your application.  A file will be set up when we receive your first piece of mail.
• English language test: an official TOEFL or IELTS score if required.
