Journalist, author and media entrepreneur Erin Millar will be the guest speaker at the orientation for incoming UBC journalism students on Tuesday September 8, 2015.
Millar is co-founder and director of Discourse Media, a new media startup based in Vancouver that produces in-depth journalism projects about complex issues.
In her talk, she will share her experiences of exploring new digital ways of telling stories with impact.
Millar oversaw Discourse Media’s project Moving Forward about transportation in Metro Vancouver. The project was a finalist for Best Data Journalism Website of the Year awarded by the Global Editors Network.
She was named Ashoka Canada’s first Storyteller-in-Residence fellow and an Amex Emerging Social Innovator in recognition for her work experimenting with new models of public interest journalism.
Before founding Discourse Media, Millar spent a decade freelancing for The Globe and Mail, Maclean’s, Reader’s Digest, The Walrus, The Times of London and other publications. She has reported from over a dozen countries on three continents
She is a former president of Canadian University Press. Her book, The Canadian Campus Companion: Everything you need to know about university and college, was published by Thomas Allen Ltd. in 2011. She teaches journalism at Quest University.
