Dan Burnett is an experienced, well known media lawyer and a sessional instructor in media law at the UBC Graduate School of Journalism. Dan advises and teaches working journalists as well as student journalists on all areas of media law, including libel, privacy, contempt, publication bans, freedom of information, intellectual property and freedom of expression issues. 

He has vast experience in these areas, having represented media clients in numerous precedent setting cases before all court levels including the Supreme Court of Canada. Dan heads Owen Bird’s Media Law Practice Group and is a founding member of the Canadian Media Lawyers Association. He is recognized for his prominence in the area of defamation and media law in both Lexpert and The Best Lawyers in Canada.  In 2007, Dan was honoured as “Friend of the Industry” by the Radio Television News Directors Association of Canada. 

Dan is a 1986 graduate of the University of Victoria law school and was called to the bar of British Columbia in 1988.
