Int’l Reporting class encourages ?bold, relentless story-chasers?

The Ryerson Review of Journalism recently published an article about j-school international reporting classes, where the “real-life lessons are don’t get killed or kidnapped or captured”.

While some professors believe sending students to hot spots is irresponsible, others agree with Globe and Mail war correspondent Graeme Smith that these programs afford them important opportunities, particularly the UBC program, since it teaches students how to operate independently in developing countries.

The courses produce “bold, relentless story-chasers,” says Smith.

UBC j-school prof, Peter Klein of 60 Minutes, says “giving students the chance to cover these stories is necessary, especially since it’s the young journalists who often end up reporting from abroad.”

The full story by Chelsea Murray can be found on the Ryerson Review of Journalism website.
