Join Kanwar Sandhu, prominent Indian journalist and former editor of The Hindustan Times, for a talk on “Press Freedom in India”.  The open lecture will address some of India’s ethical problems in journalism.  While India is among the few places in the world where newspaper circulations are growing, it is still a long way from producing a free, responsive and responsible media. 

Currently co-authoring a book on the 1999 Kargil conflict between India and Pakistan, and launching a multi-lingual television channel called Day & Night News in Chandigarh, India, Sandhu’s journalism career has spanned over thirty years as a reporter for The Tribune, The Indian Express and for national news magazines such as the Sunday Observer and India Today.  He was resident editor of The Indian Express for six years and then the editor of The Hindustan Times for nine years. 

Besides experience in conflict areas, he has a deep interest in defence and security affairs and is one of the foremost security experts in the country.  He is credited as the pioneer of Indian civic journalism through the launch of city-specific pull-outs.
