Talk: Academia and China?s brave new media world Nov 17

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Yuezhi Zhao on November 17, 5:00 - 6: 30, at Green College Coach House, for the second in a series of talks about academic engagement in the media.

Dr. Zhao’s lecture, entitled “Academic Fortune and Misfortune in China’s Brave New Media World”, addresses public hope and despair in current modes of Chinese media and academic interaction.

The dynamics of interaction between media and academics has undergone a profound transformation in China since the 1990s.  The talk will provide an overview of key factors that have shaped the new politics of academic publicity in the Chinese media.

Dr. Zhao is an associate professor at the SFU School of Communication. She is the author of Media, Market, and Democracy in China and a co-author of Sustaining Democracy?: Journalism and the Politics of Objectivity.  She is currently writing a book on communication and power in China.

Dr. Zhao’s talk is part of a series entitled “Translations:Academic-Media Engagements in the 21st Century”, which explores academic-media engagements as an important site of university knowledge transfer and exchange.  Future talks will take place on January 19, February 23, and March 16.

This series is currently being hosted by the Graduate School of Journalism, the Centre for Policy and Higher Education and Training, and Green College.
