UBC grad, alumni and prof win BC journalism awards

Adjunct Professor Duncan McCue, alumna Cheryl Chan (‘06) and grad student Ryan Elias (‘11) picked up prestigious awards last night at the Jack Webster Awards, an event that recognizes the most outstanding journalism in BC over the course of the year.
Prof Duncan McCue, and the rest of the CBC-The National team won in the category of Best Feature Story - Television for their documentary “Junior’s Fight”. Cheryl Chan (‘06) of The Province won in the category of Best Feature Story - Print for “Operation Phoenix”. Ryan Elias, a second-year student, who studied languages in his first degree, and is currently specializing in Political Science in addition to his journalism studies, won in the category of Best Student Reporters. Alumna Lisa Johnson (‘04) of the CBC was also nominated for a Webster Award.
“What an outstanding performance by the School,” said Director and Associate Professor Mary Lynn Young. “It is exciting to know that awards are going to smart and committed journalists.”
