UBC Journalism students produce documentary for Dan Rather Reports

A documentary on the Canadian healthcare system produced for Dan Rather Reports by students in the UBC Graduate School of Journalism’s Advanced Television course will be airing in mid-April.

The team, made up of 10 second-year students, worked under the guidance of Prof. Peter Klein, a veteran producer at 60 Minutes, to create a 15-minute documentary that investigates the good and bad of Canada’s health care system. With narration from Dan Rather, the documentary follows two Canadians as they navigate the ups and downs of the health care system and features the candid thoughts of Canadian doctors who deal with the system everyday for better - or worse.

The piece marks the second consecutive year UBC graduate journalism students have teamed up with Dan Rather Reports. Last year, students completed a documentary, “A Safe Place to Shoot Up” on Vancouver and its controversial drug policies that include providing drug users with access to safe injections.
