SOJ student-led news website nominated for national publishing award

The School of Journalism’s student-led news service, TheThunderbird.ca, is the only journalism school news website nominated for The Canadian Online Publishing Awards.  The Thunderbird.ca was chosen as a finalist in the category of best online-only article/series for a series on immigration.  The new Canadian Publishing Awards, produced by Masthead, received more than 250 entrants. 

The articles are:

Premier woos Punjabis by student Kate Allen

Afghan pop singer stands up for women by student Erin Empey

Canada failing foreign nannies by student Rebecca teBrake

The articles originated from assignments in the school’s Integrated Journalism program in Spring 2009. They are up against entries from fellow-nominees, The Tyee, Canadian Living and Granville Online. Winners will be announced Oct. 26 in Toronto. The Canadian Online Publishing Awards recognizes excellence in online editorial and innovation by Canadian magazine and website publishers.
