Sheriffs round up jurors on the street
By Kyle Harland
The Globe and Mail, November 29, 2007
Court sheriffs in New Westminster on the hunt for jurors recently corralled more than 30 unsuspecting people, bringing them in from the street and in front of a judge.
The sheriffs were forced to resort to the unusual procedure last week when the jury pool was depleted - the result of what some say is a rise in the number of claims the Insurance Corporation of British Columbia is taking to court.
Apartment building project faces strong opposition
By Anna Olejarczyk
Turkish Daily News, September 27, 2007
Illegal construction issues plaguing Konak, İzmir’s largest sector with such illegally-constructed buildings, are being tackled thanks to a $10 billion plan to build new apartment buildings and encourage residents of shantytowns to relocate.
Shantytowns have been a long-standing issue in İzmir, further exacerbated with politicians awarding amnesty in order to get votes, and are finally being dealt with properly and legally. “In terms of city planning, this was one of the biggest mistakes,” said Konak district Mayor Muzaffer Tun?ağ.
When racism ruled
By Catherine Rolfsen
The Vancouver Sun, September 1, 2007
On a muggy September evening a century ago, nearly 9,000 people marched to Vancouver’s city hall under a banner calling “For a White Canada.”
The mob swarmed the building on Sept. 7, 1907, to listen to speeches decrying the moral and economic impact of a growing Asian population, and to demand an immediate end to immigration from China, Japan and India.
Women the world over find veil limits job choice
By Deena Hussein
Reuters, August 22, 2007
Aysha Obeid couldn’t get a job as a shop assistant in Dubai because of the veil that covered her face, exposing only her eyes to the outside world. So to improve her employment prospects, Obeid stopped wearing the veil.
“No one takes women with niqab in the retail sector,” said Obeid, 22.
